Writing has always been a secret part of me, a quiet flame flickering in the background of my life. I started writing at 16, but for years, my dream of becoming an author felt out of reach. Without support at home, my passion was something I kept hidden. It wasn’t until I faced profound loss and personal upheaval that I found the courage and space to pursue my dream fully. This is the story of how tragedy and a lifelong love of vampire romance shaped my path to becoming an author.

Early Passion Without Support

At 16, I discovered the power of storytelling. I was drawn to the mysterious and dark allure of vampire tales. Bram Stoker’s Dracula was my first encounter with vampires on screen. The film’s haunting atmosphere and complex characters fascinated me. On paper, Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter introduced me to a world where romance and danger intertwined, sparking an obsession that still burns today.

Despite this passion, my home environment was not encouraging. Writing was seen as a hobby, not a career. I was told to focus on more “practical” goals. This lack of support made it difficult to share my work or even believe in my potential. For years, I wrote in secret, scribbling stories in notebooks and typing late at night when no one was watching.

The Turning Point: Loss and Liberation

Life changed dramatically after a death in my family. The grief was overwhelming, but it also forced me to reevaluate what mattered most. Around the same time, my marriage ended in divorce. These events, painful as they were, cleared the way for me to focus on myself and my dreams.

Suddenly, the writing that had been a quiet refuge became a lifeline. I realized that if I wanted to live the life I imagined, I had to take control. The obstacles that once held me back no longer seemed insurmountable. I began to write with purpose, setting goals and dedicating time each day to my craft.

How Vampire Romance Shaped My Voice

The vampire genre is more than just a fascination; it shaped my voice as a writer. The blend of darkness, romance, and complex characters taught me how to create tension and emotional depth. Bram Stoker’s Dracula showed me the power of atmosphere and suspense, while Anita Blake demonstrated how to mix romance with action and moral complexity.

These influences helped me develop a unique style. I learned to balance the eerie with the intimate, the supernatural with the human. Writing vampire romance allowed me to explore themes of love, loss, and identity in ways that felt deeply personal.

Building a Writing Routine and Finding Community

Building a writing routine didn’t come naturally to me—it had to fit into the chaos of real life. Most days, that meant carving out time while my daughter was at school, or stealing an hour before bed when the house finally got quiet. Some days the words flowed, and other days I just showed up anyway, because I’ve learned that consistency matters more than waiting for the “perfect” moment. Finding a community made just as big of a difference. Writing can feel incredibly isolating, but for me, that changed when I found a friend at work who believed in my book as much as I do. She’s become my unofficial marketing team, constantly hyping me up, sharing ideas, and reminding me why I started this in the first place. Having that kind of support—someone in your corner who truly gets it—has made this journey feel a lot less lonely and a lot more possible.

Encouragement for Aspiring Writers

If you have a dream to write, especially if you face obstacles like I did, remember these points:

  • Believe in your passion even when others don’t.

  • Create a daily writing habit to build momentum.

  • Find a community that supports and challenges you.

  • Use your personal experiences to add depth to your stories.

  • Keep learning and revising; writing is a craft that improves with effort.

  • Don’t fear rejection; it’s part of the process, not a final verdict.

Embracing the Future

My journey from a quiet teenager with a secret passion to a published author was shaped by loss, resilience, and a deep love for vampire romance. Writing gave me a way to process pain and transform it into something meaningful. It showed me that even in the darkest moments, creativity can light the way forward.

If you feel stuck or unsupported, know that your story matters. Your passion can become your path. Keep writing, keep dreaming, and let your own journey unfold.
